An article in the latest issue of the British Medical Journal examines how lessons learnt from SARS epidemics in China may help preparations for new epidemics, such as pandemic ‘flu. Mainland China experienced three outbreaks of SARS between November 2002 and May 2004. The first outbreak resulted in a pandemic and caused huge financial loss and social panic, but rigorous control policies prevented further pandemics. What happened with the spread of SARS must not be allowed to happen again with H5N1. Incessant efforts are needed to improve our preparedness. China's central government has allocated 120 million yuan (15.2 million U.S. dollars) to regions struck by recent severe natural disasters, said the Ministry of Finance. Half will be allocated to areas struck by a severe drought in Sichuan and other regions in southwest China and half will be used for disaster recovery operations related to typhoon Saomai. According to aljazeera, Eta has accused the Spanish government of bad faith in peace talks and threatened an unspecified response if what it calls attacks against nationalist politicians continue.
