Trend Micro has reported that cybercriminals are not only leveraging new technologies to propagate cybercrime, but are also reinventing forms of social engineering to cleverly ensnare both consumers and businesses, according to the ‘Trend Micro Threat Roundup and Forecast 1H 2008’ report. As a result, the last six months saw an upswing in web threats, but steady decreases in adware and spyware that are generated by outdated technical methods and can no longer compete with high-level security solutions. The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) held its 22nd meeting early in July. COAG considered several issues in relation to Australia’s security and emergency management arrangements. Following a review of the National Emergency Protocol, COAG agreed to adopt Model Arrangements for Leadership during Emergencies of National Consequence to guide national efforts in coordinating the response to, and recovery from, emergencies of national consequence. These model arrangements will also guide work by the Ministerial Council for Police and Emergency Management (MCPEM) in developing Australia’s governance arrangements for a catastrophic natural disaster. COAG also asked the MCPEM to propose a way forward for a nationally-consistent community emergency warning system, for consideration by COAG at its October 2008 meeting.

Computacenter and BT have jointly developed a disaster recovery solution that enables employees to use their home as their place of work in the event of a disaster. The Recover to Home solution means that employees with an existing digital subscriber line (DSL) or a BT Internet Teleworker connection can be set up at home in a matter of hours thanks to Computacenter’s experience of delivering hardware at short notice and BT’s ability to deliver flexible, business-class solutions into the home. A Computacenter engineer will visit to simplify the technology set-up and a connection will be made over the existing phone network, a digital subscriber line or a new BT Internet Teleworker connection. Audio conferencing can also be provided via BT’s Meet Me Service and there is also an option for BT Teamphone to manage call routing efficiently.
