BCI Working Paper looks at the business continuity implications of smart cities

The Business Continuity Institute has published the latest in its Working Paper series of detailed business continuity articles. ‘Exploring business continuity implications of smart cities vulnerable to cyber attack’ by Gianluca Riglietti offers an overview of smart cities today, exploring the opportunities as well as the challenges they bring.

In the paper, Gianluca concludes that cyber resilience strategies will have to be implemented in order to mitigate the risks that could disrupt a smart city, and that business continuity is also necessary, alongside other management disciplines such as information security, to ensure they operate smoothly. The analysis has shown that there is ground for collaboration and an overlap in terms of good practice across disciplines.

"This technology-driven approach is not always well received," says Patrick Alcantara, Research & Insight Lead at the Business Continuity Institute. "The reliance on connective technology raises questions related to resilience given its susceptibility to outage, failure or breach. Gianluca Riglietti’s paper addresses these concerns and provides an excellent foundation to explore how smart cities can change our lives. Using business continuity principles as a framework for building cyber resilience, he suggests a way forward for managing these smart cities."
