UK local authorities failing when it comes to some aspects of disaster recovery planning

Get free weekly news by e-mailBeCrypt, a provider of data security, remote working and disaster recovery solutions, has released findings from its recent Public Sector Data Security Survey. The survey, conducted amongst councils, London boroughs and police authorities, investigated how public sector organisations are approaching the requirement for mobile working and the issues around this for data security. According to findings in the research, only 8 percent of those local authorities interviewed have disaster recovery plans which include provisions for denial of access to work premises. In addition 90 percent of participants also stated that they do not have specific procedures for protecting sensitive data in mobile situations.

The survey was conducted during August and September 2007. Questions in the survey asked: what disaster recovery plans councils had in place in the event that employees may not be able to get in to work; how important mobile working is to the organisation; and what data security protection policies and procedures were in place for mobile devices. It also included questions on data leakage and the usage of USB devices.
