The National Workshop on Tsunami Risk Management will take place on 29 November, 2007 at Centaur Hotel, New Delhi, India. Organised by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), this event will discuss the National Disaster Management Authority’s proposed risk management framework for Tsunami disasters and aims to finalize a document giving National Disaster Management Guidelines for Tsunami Risk Management and to work out an effective strategy for strengthening preparedness, response and rehabilitation capabilities.
The southern states of India were badly hit by the 2004 Tsunami waves. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) assessment report estimated that overall damages to assets were about $575 million and productivity losses about $450 million. The reconstruction estimate is higher than these damages as it will take into account replacement of the damaged assets with new ones not only of equal value, but with upgrades to services and infrastructure in order to reduce the previous inherent vulnerability.
State-wise, Tamil Nadu was the worst affected with reconstruction needs estimated at $868 million, followed by Kerala ($158 million), Pondicherry ($114 million) and Andhra Pradesh ($73 million).
