Executive summary

Maintaining high network availability and performance is a necessary part of running a productive business. And while there is a broad range of tools available to help IT groups manage their networks, those tools have not kept pace with the complexity of the network and the demands for high availability and performance.

New tools are needed that enable IT groups to proactively assure service levels, resolve problems faster, and manage the WAN more effectively.

Network Behavior Analysis (NBA) systems provide a new way of looking at the IT infrastructure by analyzing network traffic to provide valuable information about the interactions of and dependencies between users, applications, and systems. Specifically, NBA systems offer six ways to improve the availability and performance of business services:

Proactive service assurance
1. Define service-level objectives and monitor for exceptions
2. Define usage policies and monitor for violations

Faster problem resolution
3. Identify dependencies between users, applications, networks, and systems
4. Automate workflow with contextual information

Effective WAN management
5. Identify bandwidth utilization by application
6. Identify trends for improved capacity management
