During yesterday’s (18th Nov) Queen’s Speech, which marks the start of a new session of Parliament, and the last session before a General Election, the UK government committed itself to introducing new legislation relating to flood management.
In the speech the Queen stated, on behalf of the government, that:
“Legislation will be introduced to protect communities from flooding and to improve the management of water supplies.”
The announcement was welcomed by the Association of British Insurers, which called for the Bill to be given a high priority:
“Managing the UK’s rising flood threat better is crucial for the five million properties at risk of flooding,” stated the ABI. “It is also essential to ensure that flood insurance remains widely available. We welcome this Bill which should represent an overhaul in flood management, which we have long campaigned for. Its progress into law should be a priority.”
