Newtek Business Services has announced the findings of its SB Authority Market Sentiment Survey, a monthly window into the concerns of independent business owners. Based on a poll of approximately 1,200 respondents, one of the key findings from the September survey was that only 27 percent of small business owners' have had an outside party test their computer systems to ensure they are hacker proof. In addition, 39 percent of business owners stated they do not have their data backed up in more than one location.
Recent studies by ClusterSeven and by risk consultant Protiviti and accountancy institute the ICAEW have concluded that organizations are putting themselves at considerable financial and reputational risk by failing to properly control the way they use spreadsheets. The Protiviti/ICAEW survey revealed that three quarters (75 percent) said that their company did not have a policy or processes in place relating to the design, development and/or control of spreadsheets. Of those accountants surveyed, almost a quarter (23 percent) claim their organization has experienced financial or reputational losses that can be directly attributed to the use of spreadsheets or poor controls governing the use of spreadsheets. www.clusterseven.com
