The latest business continuity news from around the world

Business Continuity Awareness Week 2015 took place from 16th to 20th March and, following the event, Continuity Central initiated a quick survey to find out what business continuity professionals feel about it.

The online survey was open for 96 hours and 125 people responded. Of these, 36 percent were from the UK, 20 percent from the United States, 8 percent from Australia and 7 percent from Canada. The rest were from various other countries around the world.

64 percent of respondents were from large organizations (categorized as having more than 1000 employees), 13 percent from micro organizations (less than ten employees), 12 percent from medium sized organizations (251 to 1000 employees) and 11 percent were from small organizations (11 to 250 employees).

Business Continuity Awareness Week involvement

40 percent of respondents took part in Business Continuity Awareness Week as an individual and 33 percent said that their organization had taken place. However, 40 percent of respondents said that ‘neither myself nor my organization took part’.

Those who had taken part in Business Continuity Awareness Week either individually or whose organization had taken part were asked to provide a summary of what their involvement had been. These can be categorized as:

  • Attended webinars: 26 percent
  • Internal awareness raising activities: 24 percent
  • Conducted internal business continuity training: 12 percent
  • Posted intranet articles / information: 10 percent
  • Presented / hosted a webinar: 8.5 percent
  • Tweeted about Business Continuity Awareness Week: 8.5 percent
  • Conducted a quiz / competition: 6 percent
  • Played the BC24 game: 6 percent
  • Used the BCI’s posters: 6 percent
  • Blogged about Business Continuity Awareness Week: 5 percent
  • Promoted business continuity to partner organizations: 5 percent
  • Attended an external Business Continuity Awareness Week event: 5 percent
  • Organized a test / exercise: 5 percent
  • Contributed to the Flashblog: 3.5 percent
  • Recirculated the BCI’s daily messages: 3.5 percent

Views about Business Continuity Awareness Week

Respondents were asked to give their personal view of Business Continuity Awareness Week. The majority (75 percent) think that it is useful, with 43 percent stating that it ‘should continue as it is’. However, 32 percent think that, while it is useful, it could be improved. A further 11 percent of respondents said that Business Continuity Awareness Week is not useful as it is but ‘could become so if it was changed / improved’. No respondents thought that Business Continuity Awareness Week is ‘not useful and should be discontinued’. The remaining 14 percent answered that they did not know or did not have an opinion about Business Continuity Awareness Week.

The respondents who thought that Business Continuity Awareness Week could be improved were asked to make suggestions about how it could be. These responses can be read here, verbatim apart from being spell checked.
